A new study shows approximately 1 out of every 200 children have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus and that in the last four weeks, a 90% increase in known child cases has occurred.

The report, created by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, indicated that while child cases had increased, few children are severely affected by the virus.

“At this time, it appears that severe illness due to COVID-19 is rare among children,” the report reads. “However, states should continue to provide detailed reports on COVID-19 cases, testing, hospitalizations, and mortality by age so that the effects of COVID-19 on children’s health can continue to be documented and monitored.”

The study showed more than 380,000 children had tested positive for the virus. Of that total, approximately 180,000 had been discovered in a four-week period ending Aug. 6.

The increase in total cases was more than 90% in that four-week period.

The report showed children with COVID-19 make up a very small portion of the total deaths, less than one-half of one percent of children who get infected die.

As of Monday, Mississippi had no reported pediatric deaths due to COVID-19.
