After three days of reporting lower-than-average numbers of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases, Mississippi reported more than 1,000 new cases Wednesday along with 45 additional deaths.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,081 new coronavirus cases Wednesday and 45 more deaths from the prior day. Of the deaths reported Wednesday, 17 actually occurred between July 26 and August 6 but were delayed in being reported.

In total, 69,374 cases have been found in the state since March. The state believes nearly 50,000 of those cases have recovered.

A total of 1,989 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.

Despite the jump in daily cases on Wednesday, the 7-day and 14-day averages of new cases continued to decline, indicating that measures to slow the virus’ spread may be working.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped to 847 with Wednesday’s update.

The 14-day, daily average dropped to 969 cases per day. Wednesday was the first time since mid-July that the 14-day average dropped back below 1,000 cases per day.
