Mississippi reports low new coronavirus cases, state passes milestone in virus deaths

Mississippi’s daily number of new coronavirus cases dipped again Thursday indicating measures to curb the virus’ spread are working, but the state also passed a milestone – more than 2,000 deaths related to the virus.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 612 new coronavirus cases Thursday and 22 more deaths from the prior day.
In total, 69,986 cases have been found in the state since March. The state believes nearly 50,000 of those cases have recovered.
A total of 2,011 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.
The 7-day and 14-day averages of new cases continued to decline, indicating that measures to slow the virus’ spread may be working.
The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped to 798 with Thursday’s update.
The 14-day, daily average dropped to 886 cases per day.
Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
