A deputy in Louisiana has been hospitalized for gunshot wounds he sustained during a gunfire exchange with a man who opened fire on him and another deputy, authorities said.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning in Stanley, a town about 233 miles (375 kilometers) northwest of Baton Rouge, the Louisiana State Police said in a news release.

Authorities said the two DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s deputies were responding to call at a residence when a man inside the house fired gunshots at them, wounding the one deputy.

The man, Jeffrey Booker, then exchanged gunfire with the other deputy before barricading himself inside the house, officials said. He surrendered after a brief standoff.

Authorities did not give a reason as to why the deputies were called to the house. The wounded deputy was transported to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Booker has been booked into jail on charges including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, several counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest.

It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
