The race for which state flag design wins the hearts and minds of Mississippi voters may be down to two of the five designs being considered by the Mississippi flag commission.

Voters on the Mississippi Department of Archives and History website favor the Great River Flag, which features a red and white shield on a dark blue background, and a flag that features an outline of the western boundary of the state with a magnolia encircled in stars.

The vote on the website, which is accessible by anyone with an Internet connection, is not scientific and may be taken into account by flag commission members when choosing a final design. Commission members may choose to select one design or may decide to choose elements from several of the designs.  A final design is to be submitted to Gov. Tate Reeves and the Legislature by Sept. 2.

On Tuesday, members of the Commission to Redesign the Mississippi State Flag will meet at the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson at 10:30 a.m. Each of the five final flag designs under consideration will be raised on the flagpole. Afterward, the commissioners will continue with a meeting at the Two Mississippi Museums.

The commission will choose the final design during their September 2 meeting and report that selection to the governor and legislature.
