Mississippi reports lower-than-average new coronavirus cases, 26 new deaths

Mississippi reported lower-than-average new coronavirus cases Thursday, but more than two dozens additional deaths, the state health department reported.

Mississippi’s 7- and 14-day, daily average of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases dropped slightly Thursday as well.

On Thursday, the state reported 585 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours. The state also reported 26 more deaths Thursday from the prior day.

Through Thursday’s statistics, 739 deaths have been reported in August from COVID-19, making August the deadliest month on record for Mississippi. The monthly death toll, however, is not exact due to delays in reporting that can cause deaths to be reported weeks after the person died.

In total, 80,695 cases have been found in the state since March. The state believes more than 62,000 of those cases have recovered.

A total of 2,399 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped to 749 with Thursday’s update.

The 14-day, daily average dropped to 765  cases per day.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
