Mississippi reported lower-than-average new coronavirus cases Friday and the 14-day average of new cases dropped to the lowest level in more than a month.

On Friday, the state reported 599 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours. The state also reported 14 more deaths Friday from the prior day. Five of the deaths reported Friday actually occurred between July 26 and August 19, but the reporting was delayed.

Through Friday’s statistics, 753 deaths have been reported in August from COVID-19, making August the deadliest month on record for Mississippi. The monthly death toll, however, is not exact due to delays in reporting that can cause deaths to be reported weeks after the person died.
