A Georgia mother and father have been charged in their 12-year-old daughter’s death.

Georgia Bureau of Investigations agents announced they arrested John Joseph Yozviak, 38, and charge him with murder and cruelty to a child.

Last week, police arrested Kaitlyn Yozviak’s mother, Mary Katherine “Katie” Horton, and charged her with murder.

Kaitlyn, 12, was “subjected to excessive physical pain due to medical negligence,” GBI agents reported in a written news release.

On August 26, the GBI was contacted to help the Ivey Police Department with the investigation after Kaitlyn’s mother called 911 and said her daughter was unresponsive.

She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. After an autopsy, police arrested her mother.

GBI Special Agent Mary Chandler told NBC News that the family had been investigated for alleged child neglect multiple times.

“Basically there’s a history with Department of Family and Child Services in a number of counties in this area since the child has been board,” she told the TV station. “This condition of a child is the worst we’ve ever seen.”
