Mississippi reported a slightly higher than average number of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases Thursday, but the state’s overall virus picture seems vastly improved that just a few weeks ago.
The lower trend caused Gov. Tate Reeves to warn Mississippians on Wednesday not to let their guards down as another potentially deadly spike is around the corner with Labor Day weekend approaching.
On Wednesday, Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs urged caution regarding the upcoming Labor Day weekend.
“Please, let’s not repeated the errors from Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, we had massive increases in cases and deaths because we got carried away,” he said. “This is not the time to be having big family gatherings or big social gatherings.”
On Thursday, the state reported 751 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.
The state also reported 10 more deaths Thursday from the prior day.
In total, 85,116 cases have been found in the state since March. The state believes approximately 68,000 of those cases have recovered.
A total of 2,536 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.
The 7-day, daily average of new cases rose slightly to 632 with Thursday’s update.
The 14-day, daily average dropped slightly to 691 cases per day.
