Most Mississippi counties have turned a corner on the COVID-19 coronavirus fight, but two counties with Mississippi’s biggest universities are not among them, the state reported.

“Mississippi has truly turned a corner,” Gov. Tate Reeves said Tuesday> “But we also know with this virus, we cannot let our guard down. Things can change very, very quickly.”

The state reported much lower numbers of new cases over the weekend.

“However, we suspect some of that is just a manifestation of the Labor Day holiday,” Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said Tuesday.”

Dobbs said on Wednesday the state would report the death of another Mississippian under the age of 20 who has recently died from the virus.

“The majority of counties have shrinking case burdens,” Dobbs said. “When we look at the most recent two-week data … we saw that 62 counties were shrinking in the number of cases that they were having, 20 had increased.

“We do see some outliers, particularly Lafayette County and Oktibbeha counties (homes to the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University, respectively),” Dobbs said. “Lafayette County had an increase of 244 cases.”

Oktibbeha saw an increase of 141 cases, Dobbs said.

“Look at what happened in Spain and Israel, who thought they had it licked and now their case rates are higher per capita than the United States,” Dobbs said.
