Mississippi coronavirus cases keep dropping, but ‘we are still in the fight,’ governor says

Mississippi’s trailing averages of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases continued to decline Thursday with the latest statistics from the state health department, but the rules to mitigate virus spread should stay in place, the governor said.
On Thursday, the state reported 517 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.
“The numbers are falling, and they’re falling quickly because of your hard work,” Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said. “Keep doing what you’re doing, because it’s working.
“But it is still ongoing. We’re still in the fight,” he said. “Please stay sharp.”
The state also reported 33 new deaths Thursday. Of the deaths reported Thursday, 11 actually occurred between August 7 and September 1.
In total, 88,322 cases have been found in the state since March. The state believes approximately 74,000 of those cases have recovered.
A total of 2,656 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.
The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped to 458 with Thursday’s update. That number was the lowest 7-day, daily average since June 24.
The 14-day, daily average dropped to 545 cases per day.
