150 students in state’s largest school district in quarantine; 16 positive cases reported

Mississippi’s largest school district reports that 150 of its students are in quarantine after 16 COVID-19 coronavirus cases were identified among students last week.

DeSoto County Schools has the highest student enrollment of any school district in Mississippi.  The enrollment for DeSoto County Schools in north Mississippi for the 2019-2020 school year was over 34,000 students.  132 of the other 137 school districts in Mississippi have an enrollment of less than 10,000 students, and 7.5% of public school students in Mississippi attend DeSoto County Schools.

District data from the Sept. 21-25 shows that ten schools in the district has at least one positive case of the virus among students in that one-week period:

Center Hill High School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case, 2 students on quarantine
DeSoto Central High School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case, 13 students on quarantine
Hernando Middle School – 2 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, 35 students on quarantine
Oak Grove Central Elementary School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case
Lake Cormorant High School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case
Lewisburg High School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case, 12 students on quarantine
Olive Branch High School – 6 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, 67 students on quarantine
Olive Branch Elementary School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case, 7 students on quarantine
Southaven High School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case, 14 students on quarantine
Greenbrook Elementary School – 1 new confirmed COVID-19 case

DCS officials say the numbers above do not include students who are quarantined by the Mississippi State Department of Health for situations unrelated to school.

Officials also said that their numbers may differ from the numbers reported by MSDH for Desoto County because of possible virus cases in private schools.
