Mississippi landmark hardware store closing after 75 years

After 75 years of serving Jackson customers, Montgomery Hardware is closing its doors.

Store owners Sherrell and Lea Thornton say they are retiring. The store will close with a retirement sale beginning October 1.

The store opened in the mid-1940s on North State Street in Fondren. It moved to its current location on Old Canton Road in 1956.

“We have enjoyed the support of generations of Jacksonian at Montgomery Hardware and we cannot thank you enough!” the couple wrote in a letter to their customers and friends. “Montgomery Hardware is a part of our family and we are sad but at the same time we are excited about what the future holds.”

Customers from across the state left messages of sadness and support on Montgomery Hardware’s Facebook page.

“I’m so sad you’re closing, but I’m grateful for how many times I’ve received stellar help just down the street. You’ll be sorely missed!!!” Kristen Tordella-Williams wrote.

You deserve to retire. You also deserve many awards for customer service, civility, and kindness. Thank you. Rest, assured, you will be missed in many ways. Be well,” Dierdre Payne wrote.

Sherrell and Lea Thornton wrote in their letter how grateful they are for the many decades of doing business.

“Again, with full hearts we thank you for 75 great years in business. We are excited about the next chapter in our lives and we are thankful for your support and friendship through the years,” the Thornton’s wrote.
