A Warren County woman reportedly shot in the abdomen by her grandson on Sept. 25 has died.

Officials confirmed that Evelyn Davenport died as a result of her injuries late Wednesday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Samuel Hunter Anderson, 25, is charged in connection to the shooting. He has been held without bond in the Warren County Jail since being charged with attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Those charges are expected to be elevated today after Davenport’s death.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said Anderson will appear in court Wednesday afternoon, where his charges will be upgraded to first-degree murder. Anderson is set to appear before County Court Judge Marcie Southerland at 3 p.m.

Following the early morning shooting, Anderson was taken into custody at his grandmother’s home on U.S. 61 South where the shooting took place.

Deputies and emergency medical units were called just before 8:30 a.m. to the 9000 block of U.S. 61 South in response to a shooting. Deputies arriving at the scene found Davenport with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. According to sheriff’s department reports, she named Anderson as the shooter.

Warren County Justice Court Judge Jeff Crevitt refused to set a bond for Anderson during an initial court appearance.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said the Mississippi Department of Corrections has a hold on Anderson for a probation violation involving a 2016 residential burglary conviction.

At the time of Anderson’s initial court appearance, Warren County Martin Pace declined to comment on what led to the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation.

After taking Anderson into custody, officials recovered a shotgun they believe was used in the shooting.

“Part of what the investigators are trying to put together is what led up to it this morning,” Pace said in September. “We know they were together this morning just prior to the shooting before it actually took place. What led to the shooting is just unclear at this time.”
