Misssissippi’s coronavirus fight ends week with higher trailing case numbers

Mississippi reported another high-than-average number of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases on Friday. The number capped a 7-day, trailing period in which more cases were reported than in more than a month.

On Friday, the state reported 862 new cases, bringing the total cases since the pandemic began in March to 103,681. Of those cases, the state believes approximately 90,500 have recovered.

In the last seven days, the state has reported more than 4,100 new cases of the virus. The last time more cases were reported in any 7-day period was in the first week in September.

The state reported six new deaths Friday, all of which occurred between September 19 and October 8.

A total of 3,080 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases jumped to 589 with Friday’s update.

The 14-day, daily average rose to 546 cases per day.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
