Mississippi’s trends in new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus continued to grow at a pace higher than health officials have seen since September 1, the state reported Monday.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 586 new cases on Monday, bringing the total cases since the pandemic began in March to 110,592. Of those cases, the state believes approximately 94,000 have recovered.

Monday’s numbers included cases from the last 48 hours as the state did not release virus case data on Sunday. The number of new cases that would have normally been reported Sunday was 233 and the number that would normally have been reported Monday was 353.

A sharp increase in cases over the last two weeks indicates the virus is spreading at a more rapid pace after the state’s mask mandate expired at the beginning of October.

In the last 14 days, 9,889 new cases have been identified. It’s been since September 1 when Mississippi saw any 14-day period with more cases.

The trailing 14-day total of new cases has increased more than 50 percent from the September 21 low-point when the statistic was 6,427 cases in a 14-day period.

The state reported no new deaths Sunday or Monday. A total of 3,171 people have died from the virus.

The state’s 7-day and 14-day, daily averages for new COVID-19 cases saw increases with Monday’s high number of daily cases.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases rose slightly to 766 with Monday’s update.

The 14-day, daily average rose to 706 cases per day, the highest number seen since September 1.
