Gulf Coast man dies in house fire after calling from help inside burning building

A Gulf Coast resident died in a house fire Tuesday after calling help as the fire spread through the house.

Police dispatchers were talking to the victim who described what was happening around him.

Dispatchers received the call at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.  The fire occurred on Vidalia Road west of Firetower Road in Harrison County.

Harrison County Fire and Rescue arrived within 4 minutes of the call, Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said, and the fire was already coming out the windows and doors.

Despite the efforts of Harrison County firefighters, the man died at the scene. The identity of the victim will be released after his family is notified, said Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer.

The victim was located in the house by firefighters and then carried outside to paramedics, who pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Several fire departments responded to the fire to assist Harrison County, including Pass Christian Fire Department, CRTC-Gulfport Fire Department and Diamondhead Fire Company.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
