Latest coronavirus numbers indicate virus continues to spread across Mississippi

Mississippi continues to report high numbers of the COVID-19 coronavirus as the state remains at a nearly two-month high in new cases.
Over the past 14 days, 10,195 cases were detected in the state, an increase of approximately 33 percent from two weeks ago.
“We can’t wish COVID away – but we can prevent it with very simple strategies,” Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs wrote Friday on social media.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 795 new cases on Friday, bringing the total cases since the pandemic began in March to 113,876. Of those cases, the state believes approximately 97,675 have recovered.
The state reported seven new deaths Friday, all of which occurred between October 17 and October 21. A total of 3,238 people have died from the virus, the state reported.
The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped to 660 with Friday’s update.
The 14-day, daily average dipped to 728 cases per day.
