Poll: Hyde-Smith leads Espy in race for U.S. Senate

Republican U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith has a 52% to 44% lead against Democratic challenger Mike Espy according to one poll released Tuesday.

The Civiqs poll also has President Donald Trump beating former Vice President Joe Biden in the state by a 55% to 41% margin. The poll sampled 507 Mississippians online using a national survey sample.

In the poll released Tuesday,  62% of the respondents identified as white and 36% identified as African American.

The poll also finds:

  • Support for adopting the flag proposed this summer by a legislatively created commission at 61% to 31%.
  • Support at 54% to 25% for removing a Jim Crow provision from the state Constitution requiring a candidate for statewide office to garner a majority of the vote and to win the most votes in a majority of the House districts to prevent the election from being thrown to the House to decide.

The poll did not survey respondents on the initiative to legalize medical marijuana.
