Pace of new coronavirus cases slows slightly in Mississippi

The pace of new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Mississippi has slowed slightly with the latest figures released Saturday by the state health department.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 824 new cases on Saturday, bringing the total cases since the pandemic began in March to 120,160.

Of the total cases, the state believes approximately 101,385 have recovered.

After lifting a statewide face mask mandate October 1, Gov. Tate Reeves since has mandated virus mitigation measures in 16 counties across the state, including the requirement to wear face masks when in public.

The state reported six new deaths Saturday. A total of 3,334 people have died from the virus, the state reported.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped slightly to 725 with Saturday’s update.

The 14-day, daily average rose to 725 cases per day.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
