A man has been charged with a 20-year-old murder by a Mississippi sheriff’s department.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the crime scene July 14, 2003, on County Road 1792. They found Wendy Benson deceased at the home with obvious signs of foul play.

“The case was investigated for many years; however, eventually turned cold,” a press release from the department reads. “Recently, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation met with Lee County investigators and reopened the case because of new technology in forensic testing. After a lengthy investigation, resulting in new evidence, charges were brought against Richard Truelock for the murder of Wendy Benson.

“Lee County investigators, along with MBI Investigators, worked tirelessly on the case and brought forth an end to a years’ long investigation and provided closure to the family.”

Bond was set for Truelock, 62, of Mantachie, at $1,000,000.

Sheriff Jim H. Johnson also said some media reports Tuesday were not completely correct when using the word “shooting” as the cause of death.

“We released, in print today, a news release regarding a recent arrest that was made from a 2003 case in Lee County,” Johnson said. “When it was released by the media, it contained wording that was not correct. No where in our release was the word ‘shooting’ used. This inaccurate statement was in no way approved by my staff or myself.”
