A Mississippi prison guard died after allegedly being shot by another guard Wednesday.

A statement from the correctional facility reported one guard shot the other after an argument at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Marion.

“We are heartbroken to report a tragic and fatal altercation that occurred between two correctional officers at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility,” a statement from Management & Training Corporation reads. MTC is a private company that operates numerous prisons.

According to the release, the shooting occurred in a parking lot at the Lauderdale County facility about 1 p.m. Other officers responded quickly after hearing the gunshots and restrained the suspect until local law enforcement officers responded.

The victim was dead at the scene and the other officer was arrested by the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.

“The facility is fully cooperating with local law enforcement as they investigate what led to the altercation. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. MTC is committed to supporting them through this very difficult time,” the statement reads.
