Multi-car pileup shuts down traffic, causing major delays on parts of Mississippi interstate

Hancock County officials are working accidents on Interstate 10 because of icy road and bridge conditions, something they said they had not anticipated having to address.

“Well, we never anticipated using this graphic, but here goes,” HCSO officials said on a social media post warning of icy conditions. “We are receiving reports of icy roads throughout Hancock County. Please use caution in driving to/from places that are essential. Please refrain from driving on roadways if not essential.”

A multi-car pileup on the Louisiana side of the East Pearl River Bridge has shut down traffic, causing delays along Interstate 10 as officials work the scene.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has missed the following:

Multiple vehicle crashes on the LA side of the East Pearl River Bridge, causing major delays. Icy road conditions, and slow moving traffic in the area. Use caution, and be prepared to stop.


The accident West of Exit 2 on I-10 is being diverted at Exit 2, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say drivers can divert on Exit 13 (Highway 603) to Texas Flat Road and Highway 59.

The other wreck was reported on the Bay St. Louis/Diamondhead bridge.

“If you ABSOLUTELY MUST DRIVE, please ensure your windshield is clear of ice BEFORE driving,” HCSO officials cautioned.
