Winter storm deaths in Mississippi rise to 8 — with 2 new deaths announced Saturday

The number of winter-related deaths in Mississippi has risen to eight since Jan. 14, when an arctic blast brought severe weather and extremely low temperatures.

Two new deaths were announced by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) on Saturday, Jan. 20.

The two new deaths were connected to an incident on US-82 in Leflore County, according to MEMA. The incident is being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

No other details were offered about the deaths.

So far, eight people have died because of the severe winter weather since Sunday, Jan. 14.

The previous deaths happened in Washington, Rankin, Chickasaw, Sharkey and Humphreys counties.
