It took over two months for a Mississippi man to cash his winning Powerball ticket worth $50,000.
The Petal man bought the winning ticket on Dec. 18 and selected the Double Play option f0r $1 making him eligible for the second Double Play drawing in the Powerball Lottery.
In the Dec. 20 Double Play drawing, he narrowly missed the $10 million top prize by one ball. He matched 4 white balls and the Powerball in the Double Play lottery. The winning numbers were 22, 25, 28, 30, 53 with a Powerball of 3.
The Petal man matched all but the number 28.
Instead of the $10,000,000 prize, the Petal man won $50,000 — not bad for a $36 lottery ticket.
His prize was announced on March 1, more than two months after the drawing.
The man bought his ticket from the JR Food Mart #116 in Petal.
About the Double Play Option
The new Powerball add-on feature, Double Play, allows players to match their Powerball numbers in a separate drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million.
For an additional dollar, players purchase Powerball tickets with the Double Play for a separate drawing approximately 30 minutes after the Powerball drawing.
Players choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26 and will play the same numbers in both the main Powerball drawing and Double Play drawing. Powerball tickets including the Double Play feature will be eligible to win prizes in both drawings.
The Power Play option will remain unchanged. Players can continue to add the Power Play option for an additional $1 per play. Players may choose to play both the Power Play and Double Play options. While Power Play increases Powerball winnings for all prize levels except the jackpot, it does not affect Double Play winnings.
