Mississippi city mourns loss of long-time alderman, former county supervisor

The residents of one Mississippi community are mourning the loss of a longtime alderman and former county supervisor.

City of Vicksburg Ward 1 Alderman Michael Mayfield passed away overnight in a local hospital following his second battle with cancer, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. confirmed Tuesday morning.

Flaggs’s posted a tribute to Mayfield on Facebook Tuesday morning.

“My prayers are with the family of Alderman Michael A. Mayfield, Sr.,” Flaggs posted. “I ask that you keep his wife, Bertha, his children, LaTonya Course, Michael Jr (MJ) Mayfield, and Thomas Mayfield (TJ); his grandchildren, siblings, extended family, City of Vicksburg employees and the community he served in prayer.”

“This is a great loss for our city!” Flaggs said in the post.

Mayfield was elected to the North Ward Alderman position in July 2005. Before 2005, he served 10 years on the Warren County Board of Supervisors as Supervisor of District 2.

Mayfield is a graduate of the Vicksburg Public School System. He is also a graduate of Hinds Community College where he graduated with high honors in Basic Electronic and Electricity.
