Are self-checkouts soon to become a thing of the past?

CNN reports that Dollar General has announced plans to remove self-checkouts from 300 stores that have been identified as having high levels of shoplifting.

In other stores, Dollar General will limit access to self-checkouts to customers with five items or less, according to the news reports.

Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos made the announcement during a call with analysts Thursday and says the move will help reduce losses at some stores.

The store chain joins other retailers looking to scale back their use of self-checkouts. Both Walmart and Target are reportedly reviewing their use of the popular checkout method.

TODAY recently published a story about customers reporting changes at Walmart stores.

Officials at Walmart told TODAY that customers may see changes to self-checkout lanes.

Although Target customers have expressed concerns on social media over closed self-checkout lanes officials have said there have been no changes to its self-checkout policy.
