An attempted arrest of a man created some scary moments in a Mississippi Community Thursday.

George County deputies traveled to the 1100 block of Howell Tanner Chapel Rd., within the Howell community, to execute a court order. Upon arrival, deputies were met by a male in possession of a firearm. Deputies attempted to take the male into custody, at which time the male refused to comply.

Robert Lewis, 66, of Lucedale, was taken into custody and booked into the George County Regional Correctional Facility. Lewis has since been charged with 10 felony counts of assault on a law enforcement officer. During an initial appearance with a George County justice court judge, Lewis was denied bond.

A deputy with the George County Sheriff’s Office suffered minor injuries during the assault.

“This is another example of the dangers our law enforcement officers and correctional officers face on a daily basis. I appreciate the work of law enforcement in bringing justice to this case,” Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said.
