Mississippi police warn of asphalt scam

A Mississippi police department is warning consumers of an annual scam. Although the warning is to the department’s local community, similar scams could occur statewide.

“Every year, a traveling asphalt crew passes through the City of Gulfport,” the statement reads. “These paving crews go around neighborhoods saying they have extra asphalt on their trucks from previous jobs. They try to convince innocent victims into purchasing asphalt from them and later charge these victims exorbitant amounts of money for poor-quality work.”

Police said the crews often travel with a dump truck and trailer with paving equipment. They are also usually from other states.
