A man who served as a deputy under two former Mississippi sheriffs has been arrested and charged with touching a child for lustful purposes.

Carl Champlin, 70, a former Adams County Sheriff’s deputy, was arrested on April 12. Champlin served as a deputy under the late sheriffs Tommy Ferrell and Ronny Brown.

Ferrell served as sheriff from 1988 to 2003, and Brown served from 2003 to 2009, when he died.

Officials say Champlin’s arrest stemmed from an investigation by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division. He was booked into the Adams County Jail and given a $75,000 bond.

“The investigation is ongoing, and more charges may come at a later date,” said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten. “I do not want to say more or discuss details about the case due to the sensitive nature of the crime.”
