Mississippi Skies: Severe weather chances increase for parts of state as storm system from Midwest approaches

The National Weather Service in Jackson warns residents in Central and Southern Mississippi that severe thunderstorms are possible late Sunday night into Monday as a line of storms is expected to approach our area from the west.

The primary risk for damaging wind gusts and a possible tornado will be late Sunday night across northeast Louisiana and southeast Arkansas.

Isolated severe storms will continue to be possible through Monday as storms shift east into Mississippi.

Much of Central Mississippi will be under a Marginal Risk of severe weather. Isolated severe storms are possible, including damaging wind gusts and hail up to quarter size. A tornado cannot be ruled out, weather officials report.

Sunday’s forecast for MississippiĀ 

North Mississippi: It will be mostly sunny, with a high near 82 degrees. Winds will be from the south at around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. On Sunday night, skies will be partly cloudy, with a low around 64. On Monday, expect a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. The chance of precipitation is 90%.

Central Mississippi: It will be partly sunny, with a high near 85. After 2 p.m., there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Winds will be between 10 to 15 mph from the south southeast, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Sunday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 66. On Monday, there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. The chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

South Mississippi: It will be partly sunny, with a high near 82. After 1 p.m., there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Winds will be between 10 to 15 mph from the south southeast, with gusts as high as 25 mph. On Sunday night, there will be increasing clouds with a 20 percent chance of showers after 4 a.m. On Monday, there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. The chance of precipitation is 60%.
