A Mississippi physician on vacation with his family was in the right place at the right time to help a teenage girl who was attacked by a shark on Friday in Florida.

Baptist Medical Center in Jackson released details Monday identifying Dr. Mohammad Ali an interventional radiologist at the hospital was one of two physicians who were at the scene and helped aid the critically wounded teen.

The girl, later identified as 16-year-old Lulu Gribbin of Mountain Brook, Alabama, was swimming with a friend in waist-deep water off a beach near Rosemary Beach in Walton County, Florida, when a shark attacked them.

Her friend received non-life-threatening wounds. Approximately 90 minutes earlier and only a few miles away in the same county, a 45-year-old woman was also attacked and critically injured.

Dr. Ali was boogie boarding with his family and another physician, the hospital reported when they “noticed a commotion and blood in the water not far from them.”

The physicians got their families to safety and rushed to help the girl, who had been pulled ashore by then.

The hospital said Ali applied tourniquets to the girl’s upper leg and hand as other medical workers assisted.

Gribbin is expected to survive, but had to have a leg and a hand amputated.

The adult woman attacked by a shark earlier on Friday had to have her arm amputated, authorities said.
