Football player with one kidney sues Southern Miss for not letting him play
A college football player born with only one kidney is suing the University of Southern Mississippi, claiming school officials removed him from the football team after learning about his condition.
The suit argues Southern Miss is in violation of federal anti-discrimination laws by refusing to play Deven Hammond, a 20-year-old LSU student who says he’s never had any medical issues related to having one kidney while playing football in high school and college. The student health center at USM also cleared him to play.
Hammond offered to sign a liability waiver hoping officials would reinstate him, but they declined.
“Protecting the USM’s Athletic Program — not Deven’s health — was the guiding star of (their) decisions,” the suit claims.
