The Mississippi State Department of Health reported Sunday morning that it was still incapable of reporting full state numbers of positive COVID-19 coronavirus cases due to software problems, but said the number of patients in hospitals had sharply risen.

The state reported 516 patients confirmed to have COVID-19 coronavirus were receiving care in Mississippi’s hospitals as of Friday.

Another 173 patients were hospitalized with suspected COVID-19, but had not been confirmed by testing.

The state has not reported a daily number of new coronavirus cases since Thursday when 381 new cases were reported.

Those cases brought the total number of cases discovered in the state to be 21,022, with 943 deaths attributed to the virus. The majority of cases recover, but some patients, particularly the elderly and people with underlying conditions, can become extremely ill.

“Our daily reporting of new cases has been interrupted as we work to resolve problems in our legacy software,” MSDH officials said Sunday in a written statement on social media. “We appreciate the importance of detailed data reporting, and hope to rectify this situation as quickly as possible and resume timely, accurate and detailed reports.”
