Mississippi ISN’T the worst state in the nation, according to Thrillist

Mississippi’s used to being at the bottom of most good lists, but a Thrillist ranking disagrees, putting Florida in the No. 50 spot.

Thrillist, whose state rankings are typically limited to the realm of food and drink, ranked Mississippi No. 45 in their “go big or go home” list, which judged each state based on “their contributions to America,” including “inventions, food/drink, somewhat productive famous people, unique physical beauty, etc.”

The reasoning for putting Florida in the bottom spot?

When putting together a list such as this, there can be some temptation to defy popular expectations, and go against the grain. However, Florida’s awfulness resume is so staggeringly impressive that it couldn’t go any other way. You were born for this. Embrace it.

Delaware, Ohio, Arizona and Utah round out the bottom five with Mississippi’s respectable-compared-to-all-other-lists spot coming in hot at No. 45.
The only state children actually use in counting games is like a John Grisham book, but Jake Brigance has to quit his lawyer job to work on a catfish aquaculture farm in Yazoo City.
There are worse things than referencing Grisham, Matthew McConaughey AND catfish in your rationale.
Michigan tops the list at No. 1, followed by Maine, Kentucky, Wisconsin and—wait for it—LOUISIANA.
The list was originally published in 2017, but a recent Miami Herald piece brought it back up for discussion.
