Rare Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Super Snake sold for $2.2 million

Americans have loved the Ford Mustang since it was first introduced in 1964. They were initially created as a sporty car for the growing working class of American, cheap, but sporty and fun to drive. One just sold for $2.2 million Friday night in Florida!

On Friday night, at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida, a rare Mustang just set a record when the hammer fell at $2 million, but with the buyers premium the total cost was $2.2 million, making the car the most expensive Mustang ever sold. But this was no ordinary Mustang; it was the rarest of the rare, a one-of-one as collectors reference them.

Auction officials had estimated the Super Snake would sell for between $1 million and $1.2 million, but two bidders wouldn’t let go until the bids reached the $2 million mark, when one bidder finally gave up his quest.

The car last sold at auction in 2013 when it fetched $1.3 million.

The 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Super Snake was the only one its kind ever built. It was created as part of a promotion to help test, of all things, Goodyear passenger car tires, which is why the rare car sports whitewall tires, something most Shelby Mustangs did not have.

During the tire test, the Super Snake was driven for 500 miles at an average speed of an amazing 142 mph.

The car features a 427-cubic-inch Ford racing engine, the same kind that powered Ford’s famous GT40 race cars from the 1960s.

Amazingly fast for its day, the car was never put into production because at the time the price would have been much higher than regular production Shelby GT500s Mustangs and even Shelby Cobras.
