Police say a man was shot inside a central Mississippi home and critically wounded after being mistaken for a burglar.

Jackson Police spokesman Sgt. Roderick Holmes tells local news outlets the shooting happened about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. He says police believe the man wasn’t related to the home’s residents, but was known to them.

It’s unclear how the man got inside. Police found a stepladder leading to a second-floor balcony in front of the house. Holmes says there’s a door inside on the balcony.

The man was shot multiple times and taken to a hospital for surgery, and is listed in critical condition.

Police aren’t releasing the names of those involved. Holmes says no charges have been filed, but says the people who were at the home are being questioned.
