An instructor at a Mississippi community college resigned Tuesday after social comments he made regarding one of the ongoing protests across the country over the death of a man in police custody.

Reuben McDowell who served as the Pearl River Community College (PRCC) band director made comments on Facebook regarding a San Diego protest over the death of George Floyd, a black man who recently died while a Minnesota police officer held his knee on Floyd’s neck.

“Start shootin a few and the rest will scatter,” McDowell wrote.

“Overwhelming force. Time to shut this s— down. Make some examples and watch the rest scatter. Take. Control,” he wrote.

PRCC’s president, Dr. Adam Breerwood, issued a public statement on the matter.

“I am saddened today. I am distraught and disappointed,” Breerwood wrote. “These comments do not reflect the values of this institution. PRCC does not tolerate the promotion of violence, hate or racism.”
